For the second consecutive day, traffic was prohibited from taking the Panaji access point of the Atal Setu after it got flooded yet again
PANAJI: The seasonal total has soared to 98 inches — a surplus of 16% — following a 24-hour spell of incessant rainfall till Tuesday morning. Two centres, Valpoi and Sakhali, crossed the double century and five centres the 100mm mark.
It was also the wettest day of the season so far, with India meteorological department (IMD), Panaji, recording an extremely high average rainfall of 140.2mm.

“It is classified as a vigorous monsoon day since the actual rainfall is four times more than the normal value for the day,” IMD-Panaji scientist Rahul M said.
The department has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall for the next three days due to the intensification of a low pressure area in the Bay of Bengal into a depression.
The system combining with an offshore trough from the Gujarat to Kerala coast has triggered extreme rainfall during the last few days.
On Tuesday, Valpoi recorded 239.3mm while Sakhali followed with 210.6mm. Pernem recorded 170.3mm, Old Goa 169.3mm, Sanguem 148.6mm, Panaji 147.8mm, Ponda 139mm, Quepem 123mm, Dabolim 100.4mm, Canacona 94.2mm and Mormugao 90mm. Figures for the Mapusa and Margao centres were not available.
Long spells of extremely heavy rainfall on Monday and the wee hours of Tuesday saw the seasonal total soar to 2,490.2mm (98 inches) taking the surplus to 16% from the 4% recorded a few days ago.
While rainfall of 2,151.3mm
(84.6 inches) is considered normal at this stage, the seasonal normal is 116 inches and with more than a month for the monsoon to end, the total rainfall appears to be racing towards this mark.
