Transport dept may ask contractor to raise no. of fittings
Panaji: Transport department officials on Monday paid a visit to various high security registration plate (HSRP) installation centres in the state.
“The fitting process is now being carried out smoothly. The staff had managed to fit HSRPs on over 50 vehicles by 11.30am,” a transport department official from Panaji said. The team had visited the centre in Porvorim, where vehicles registered at Panaji and Mapusa are being fitted with HSRPs.
“Going by the manner in which they have streamlined the process, they can probably service more than 100 vehicles.
We will ask the contractor Real Mazon India Ltd to increase the number of vehicles fitted with HSRP per day,” the official said.
TOI had earlier reported that the centres had limited the number of installations to only 100 vehicles per day in a bid to manage the influx of traffic at the centre.
Sources at the Porvorim HSRP centre said that compared to last month, the installation process and flow of vehicles are being managed better.
“There are no queues any more since limiting the number of vehicles to only 100 per day. It makes the process manageable. We haven’t been instructed yet by our higher ups, but owing to the speed at which we’re going, we can manage up to 150-170 cars per day,” a fitment centre staffer said.
Lack of space, however, continues to be a major problem at the Porvorim centre. “The fitment shed can accommodate only three to four cars at a time. Since all types of vehicles including trucks and JCBs show up for fitment, they end up parking on the main road, evoking objections from residents. While the number of vehicles per day has been restricted, we continue to struggle due to limited space,” the staffer said.
