PANAJI: Movement for Amity Towards Roads in Goa (MARG) founder Gurunath Kelekar has called for scrapping the traffic sentinel scheme, pointing out that it could turn into a business and is not the right way to instill road discipline.
Alleging that two-wheeler riders are singled out instead of high-end four-wheelers while issuing challans, Kelekar said the government should be grateful to two-wheeler owners.
Instead of providing efficient public transport, the government is victimising two-wheeler riders, he said.
"In no western country are people forced to depend on private two-wheeler transport. The government could have extended the railway line from Karmali to Panaji and which would have helped people travelling from South Goa to the North," he said.
MARG member Shirish Lawande said that the government must not pride itself in announcing the fines it collects. "This is a disgrace to the state as it means nobody is obeying the law," he said.
Kelekar said MARG will set up an association for two-wheelers where it will liaison with the government and demand a discount on spare parts and petrol, because they’re serving the government.
