GURUGRAM: Police and an NGO rescued a 20-year-old woman from Jharkhand from a house in South City-1, where she had allegedly been confined and forced to work as a domestic help for the past one year without wages.
The woman came from Simdega in Jharkhand to Gurugram two and a half years ago after eloping with a man. The man, however, soon abandoned her, and she took to working as a domestic help to support herself.
On Sunday, she managed to contact her family and told them that she had been confined in her employer’s house and working without wages.
She told them that her employers locked her up when they went out and didn’t allow her to contact anybody. The family then approached the Childline helpline and local police.
The Jharkhand Police contacted a city-based NGO Shakti Vahini, as well as their counterparts in Gurugram. On Tuesday, Shakti Vahini members and police reached the South City-1 house. It was found to be locked. When they broke in, they found the woman inside. The house owner claimed that they locked the house to keep the woman safe when they were not at home, police said.
“The guardian of the woman approached us after filing a complaint with Childline. It seems to be a case of human trafficking,” Vijay Kujur, DSP (headquarters), Simdega, told TOI.
Gurugram police commissioner Mohammad Akil said they will record the woman’s statement soon.
