GUWAHATI: GRP sleuths seized at least 1080 bottles of banned Phensedyl cough syrup worth Rs 1.79 lakh at Guwahati railway station on Monday. Following the seizure, three persons were arrested and sent to judicial custody.
All the arrested persons - Svilianthanga (30), Thangliana (35) and Lalruat Kima (30) - are from Mizoram. The trio had brought the consignment on board the Rajdhani Express from New Delhi and they were reportedly planning to take the contraband items to Aizawl.
From there, the bottles would have been sent to Bangladesh where there is a high demand for cough syrup among drug addicts.
"The trio got down from the train at the Guwahati railway station and were trying to escape vigilance, having concealed the bottles in six black bags. But GRP sleuths managed to detect them successfully," sources said. "Each bottle of Phensedyl, that costs around Rs 50 in India, is sold for Rs 150 in Bangladesh. The seizure would be worth Rs 1.79 lakh," they added.
The seizure comes after GRP on Sunday evening arrested Yaruingam R Shimray from Dimapur. Shimray was the "most wanted" in connection with the murder of a police official of Nagaland.
