DIBRUGARH/ GUWAHATI: The city police on Thursday arrested Debashish Khargharia-wanted in the case of abatement of his parents' suicide on July 1 in Sivasagar. After 18 days of ducking the law, the accused was finally caught by the police on the basis of an FIR filed by one of the three daughters of the deceased couple-Rajani and Ruby Khargharia. The parents lived in a rented house in Sivasagar.

Acting on a tip off, the Sivasagar police-in a joint operation with the city police-nabbed the culprit from the Six Mile area in Guwahati. He was taking shelter in a house in this neighbourhood with his wife Geetashree, who is also wanted by the police. While Geetashree managed to evade the police, Debashish was caught from the Ganesh Mandir HS School area around 8 in the morning.
The police said the couple were dodging arrest by changing their hideouts frequently and even moving outside of the state. They were in Guwahati to file for an anticipatory bail. "His wife will also be in our custody soon," said Sivasagar DSP Prafulla Sonowal, who led the operation. Debashish has been taken to Sivasagar for questioning.
"To evade arrest, Debashish and his wife did not use their mobile phones since they went into hiding. They came to Guwahati a couple of days ago," said Sivasagar SP Subodh Sonowal.
Debashish's parents had left behind five notes blaming their son, an ONGC employee and his wife Geetashree, a TET teacher, for driving them to suicide. The couple were in such dire straits that they could not afford to buy food, medicines and pay house rent. They had sold all their properties to secure a job for their son, one of the notes mentioned. But after getting the job, Debashish reportedly cut off all ties with his parents.
One of the three married daughters of the deceased couple filed an FIR with the Sivasagar police holding her brother and sister-in-law responsible for the suicide of their parents. Based on her complaint, the Sivasagar police registered a case against Debashish and his wife under section 306 and 420 of IPC.
