GUWAHATI:
Assam saw the biggest jump in the number of recovered cases on Wednesday with 25 patients getting discharged from Guwahati, Silchar and Jorhat even as 92 new cases were reported, pushing the total to 774.
The total number of patients discharged so far has now climbed to 87, leaving 680 active cases in hospitals.
Among the fresh cases on Wednesday is a woman from Guwahati who is the first flight passenger to have tested positive for Covid-19.
Another woman from Golaghat, who had tested negative on May 13 in New Delhi, tested positive while staying in institutional quarantine since her arrival here 10 days ago.
"The woman from Guwahati had flown in from Ahmedabad on Monday and was in institutional quarantine. Today, her sample tested positive and we have shifted her to hospital. We are trying to trace the other passengers seated near her in the flight," health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.
He added that people in batches will start leaving the institutional centres very soon after the end of the first mandatory seven days and testing negative and move to home quarantine. "Our focus will now be on the home quarantine process and there will be strict monitoring every day," Sarma said.
Sharing the news of discharge of 25 patients, Sarma tweeted, "Glad to share that total 25 patients have been discharged today in Assam after being tested #COVID19 negative twice. 22 from MMCH, 2 from SMCH & 1 from JMCH."
In another development, out of four persons who had escaped from the institutional quarantine centre at Sarusajai Athletic Stadium complex here on Tuesday, one has tested positive and has been traced to his home at Kharupetia in Darrang district. His three companions are still untraceable and their Covid-19 test results are awaited.
A Darrang district heal official said, "We have shifted the person to hospital and brought his entire family, who were his direct contacts, to institutional quarantine facility. We are also trying to trace the person's friend who had given him a ride on his bike to his home."
Another incident was reported from an institutional quarantine centre at Golaghat where people on Tuesday night created a ruckus and abused doctors and nurses following late serving of food. Sarma said, "We have the video footages and if they have gathered in close proximity while creating the ruckus, those who might be positive among them certainly might have transmitted the virus to the others and so their quarantine period will now be extended by 14 to 20 days."
