GUWAHATI: The Assam Police team, investigating the 'controversial statements' made by Arshad Madani, has reportedly seized on Sunday several documents related to the public meeting where he was present.
"Police have seized several documents including the booking details, invitations and other materials. Electronic evidence was also analysed," sources told TOI. "Investigation has found some variation in the statements of those who were present during the meeting.
The statements and the factual details need to be corroborated," they added.
The Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind (JUeH) president, in a meeting in New Delhi on November 13, had said Assam would witness unrest if the NRC updating process excludes local Muslims. The comment triggered state-wide protests and at least four cases were lodged against him in the state. The police team has also recorded the statements of at least six office bearers of the Delhi Action Committee for Assam (DACA) that organised the meeting.
Madani had said his statements were misunderstood in Assam as he had delivered his speech in Urdu. Meanwhile, protests are continuing in the state demanding Madani to be arrested and booked under the National Security Act for disturbing communal harmony.
