Assam's Maijan tea fetches Rs 70,000 for a kilo, breaks record
GUWAHATI: A batch of specially-crafted orthodox tea from the oldest tea company in the world fetched a record 70,501 for a kilo at the Guwahati Tea Auction Centre here on Wednesday, breaking the record 50,000 for a kilo set here a day ago.
Just 1.7 kg of the Maijan Orthodox Golden Tea, produced by the Assam Company India Limited (ACIL) at its Maijan tea estate in Dibrugarh, was auctioned off to Guwahati-based Mundhra Tea Company.
"One kilo of the tea will be purchased by a Belgium buyer. Another 200g has been sold to a buyer from Gujarat. The rest, 500g, will be up for sale on an online tea store, Namhah," Ramesh Mundhra, owner of the broker firm, said.
On Tuesday, the Manohari Gold Tea from the Manohari tea estate at Mohanbari in Dibrugarh had been knocked down for 50,000 a kilo, setting a world record for price commanded by a specialty tea at a tea auction. Like Manohari Gold, Maijan Gold is also produced during second flush.
"Tea produced during second flush is artisanal produce, a rare and specially handcrafted tea from select clonal tea plants ... Unique liquor character of the tea comes from the original tea plants, planted over a century ago," ACIL said.
