Debabrata Saikia launches web portal for common people
GUWAHATI: Assam’s leader of the Opposition, Debabrata Saikia on Thursday launched a web portal ‘jagaran.in’ for the common man, irrespective of his political affiliation, to register his grievances that have long been ignored by the government.
The congress leader has assured to take the grievances of the people to the authorities at the highest levels and the complainant can keep track of the status of his complaint that Saikia has forwarded to the authorities concerned.

Saikia told TOI that he wants to bridge the gap that emerges between voters and representatives they elect after formation of the government and make the voices of the people heard at the corridors of power.
“One of the undeniable aspects of parliamentary democracy is the gap that tends to form between the common people and their elected representatives after the formation of government. For example, it is often seen that a person whose pension has been delayed finds it difficult to get the wheels of the government machinery rolling,” Saikia said.
He adds that a defunct water supply scheme in some rural area is left unrepaired for months on end despite repeated complaints at the lower levels of the bureaucracy.
“It is with a view to narrowing this gap and the consequent troubles faced by the common people that I have decided to launch a web portal, ‘jagaran’, which will help all sections of the citizens of Assam, regardless of political affiliation, to articulate grievances, opinions and suggestions on various contemporary issues,” Saikia said.

He said that the portal will include the facility to register complaints which will be officially forwarded to the relevant authorities for redressal. They can further keep track of the status of that specific complaint, as pursued by the office of the Leader of the Opposition in the Assam assembly.
“It will also enable people to interact directly with me regarding both individual and public problems,” Saikia said.
Another long-term objective that I hope to accomplish through this web portal is to conduct training camps on digital media and campaign management for graduates and those on the threshold of graduating from college. “This step will, of course, depend on the quantum of response we get from those interested in undertaking the training,” Saikia added.
