GUWAHATI: A sub-inspector of Dispur Police Station was arrested on Thursday night for taking money from a banker.
The policeman, identified as Gohin Pegu, was accused of demanding Rs 20,000 from the branch manager of a city bank illegally. Police sources said the accused cop, during a routine checking on Wednesday, had confiscated the bank official's driving licence and vehicle registration certificate suspecting that they were fake.
He then demanded Rs 20,000 from him for giving the documents back.
Police commissioner Deepak Kumar said, "The accused cop, during a regular checking at Khanapara on Wednesday, inspected the vehicle documents of the complainant banker. He expressed his doubts over the authenticity of the documents and said those needed to be verified. He also took Rs 12,000 from him then."
He had also asked the complainant to bring Rs 20,000 more on Thursday to take back his driving licence and vehicle registration certificate.
"We alerted the anti-corruption wing and with their technical support managed to catch Pegu red-handed while he was taking the rest of the money from him on Thursday," the police commissioner added. On Friday, the policeman was sent to judicial custody.
The accused cop said he was falsely implicated.
