Don’t sell land to outsiders: Manipur CM

IMPAHL: Taking a serious note of the possible repurcussions of the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh on Friday urged people of the state not to sell land to illegal immigrants.
Speaking on the sidelines of an event in Wangoi, Imphal West, the chief minister added that protection of the indigenous people can be done by not selling lands to outsiders.“One should never sell precious ancestral land to get a simple government job or for owning a car,” he said. Biren further appealed to local clubs, meira paibis (women vigil groups) and civil bodies to ban entry of illegal migrants.
Stating that his government has taken a specific stand on the bill, Biren urged Union home minister Rajnath Singh to exclude Manipur from the jurisdiction of the bill.
Meanwhile, a one-day academic discourse on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill held here on Friday resolved to urge the state government to convene an emergency assembly session and pass a strong resolution that the bill should not be implemented at all in Manipur. Organized by the powerful Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS), the discourse held at the Manipur Press Club also decided that a more intense public movement under the aegis of the joint committee would be launched against the proposed legislation.
Attended by leaders of various civil bodies, academicians and lawyers, the meeting decided to press for President’s assent to the Manipur People’s Bill.
