JORHAT: Fourteen police officers in Jorhat face criminal charges of conspiracy, forgery and theft for not submitting chargesheets despite records showing that they did.
"I filed the FIR and a case has been registered at Jorhat police station against 14 police officers. It is a departmental initiative. I lodged the FIR in an official capacity following the directive by the SP, Jorhat.
Investigation is on," additional SP (Jorhat) Prakash Sonowal told TOI on Sunday.
Sonowal lodged the written complaint before the officer in charge of Jorhat police station, alleging that the accused officers "did not submit charge sheet of some cases after completion of investigation and destroyed vital documents by disobeying direction of law with intention to save accused persons from punishment."
They have been booked under Section 120B (criminal conspiracy), 379 (theft), 466 (forgery of record or public register), 204 (destruction of documents or electronic records to prevent its production as evidence), 205 (false personation for purpose of act or proceeding in suit or prosecution) and 217 (public servant disobeying direction of law with intention to save person from punishment or property from forfeiture) of the IPC.
Earlier the DIG (Eastern Range) had taken up the matter and issued strict directions to a section of police officers in Jorhat district to submit chargesheets of pending cases without delay and issued warnings that legal proceedings would be initiated against them if they failed to do so.
