The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken over the probe of the death of a senior Assam police officer, more than five years after he was gunned down by National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Songbijit) NDFB(S), a militant group.

GUWAHATI: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken over the probe of the death of a senior Assam police officer, more than five years after he was gunned down by National Democratic Front of Bodoland (Songbijit) NDFB(S), a militant group.
Hussain was killed in an ambush by the outfit at Dhekiajuli in Sonitpur district on January 28, 2014.
"Hussain was leading a combined team of the Assam Police and Army for an operation and apprehended one NDFB(S) cadre named Kharambir Basumatary at Laudangi forest area in the district.
While returning to the police station, the police party was ambushed during which Hussain and six others sustained bullet injuries. Later, Hussain and Anluck Basumatary, a civilian, succumbed to their injuries. NIA has started investigation in the case," NIA sources said.
After the incident, a police investigation revealed that security personnel travelling in three vehicles were ambushed by militants. Hussain had suffered two bullet injuries on his head and leg.
