Students from small towns dominated the list of toppers in the Class XII state board examinations this year, the results of which were declared on Saturday.

GUWAHATI: Students from small towns dominated the list of toppers in the Class XII state board examinations this year, the results of which were declared on Saturday. Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) declared the results for all four streams - arts, science, commerce and vocational - at 9am. The overall pass percentage across all streams has improved from last year.
With 95.6%, Sayan Mazumdar of Darrang College, Sonitpur and Bitupan Arandhara of Ramanujan Junior College, Nagaon were the joint toppers from the science stream.
Daisy Pathak from Silchar Government Boys Higher Secondary School, Cachar and Dishant Saikia, who appeared from Tezpur Bengali Boys Higher Secondary School, Sonitpur, jointly came second with 95.4%, followed by Hridi Priyam Sarmah of Ramanujan Junior College, Nagaon (95.2%) in the third position.
In the arts stream, Khushboo Firdous of Brilliant Academy Junior College, Darrang came first with 95.6%. Kaushik Kachari of Pragjyotika Junior College, Jorhat and Gitanjali Borthakur of Concept Junior College, Nagaon jointly shared the second rank. Both of them scored 95%. With 94.8%, Kanyashree Bhagavaty of Crescent Academy, Jorhat came third.
Cachar boy Ashim Sarkar, a student of Vivekananda Junior College, topped from the commerce stream by scoring 94.8%.
Girls outshine boys in arts, science and commerce
Nibedita Gogoi of Crescent Academy, Jorhat and Ayushi Jain of KC Das Commerce College, Guwahati came second with 93.6%. Neha Agarwalla of Gauhati Commerce College came third with 93%.
In all three streams, when it came to regular candidates, girls outshone the boys by a noticeable margin. In science, girls stayed ahead of the boys with a pass percentage of 92.98 — the pass percentage among the boys was recorded to be 89.21. In arts, girls had a pass percentage of 82.13 while that of boys stood at 76.30. The story was the same in the commerce stream as well, where girls registered a pass percentage of 93.03 while that of boys was 89.45.

Across the science, arts and commerce streams, the overall pass percentage improved from last year. In science and arts streams, the increase in pass percentage was less than one — from 85.74 to 86.59 and from 74.68 to 75.14 respectively. However, in commerce, the number went up by 3% — from 84.64% in 2018 to 87.59% this year.
In science, 15,864 students got first division, 13,231 got second division and 2,482 secured the third division. In arts, 18,575 students got first division, 42,439 got second division and 73,482 secured the third division. In commerce, 3,796 students secured first division and 5,303 got second division. A total of 6,490 students passed with third division in the commerce Stream.
