Sonowal meets world champ Hima Das's parents at Dhing

Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday visited the Dhing residence of ace srprinter Hima Das who created history by winning gold at the IAAF World Under-20 Championships at Tampere in Finland recently.

GUWAHATI: Chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal on Tuesday visited the Dhing residence of ace srprinter Hima Das who created history by winning gold at the IAAF World Under-20 Championships at Tampere in Finland recently.
"First it's Mary Kom, then Dipa Karmakar and now Hima Das. I am so proud like many others from our region for these 'wonder women' who are leading the national sports campaign with the tricolour in their hand," said Sonowal.
Congratulating Hima's parents on the success of their daughter, the CM also felicitated them. While talking to Sonowal, Hima's father informed him about various facets of his daughter's success story in the sporting world.
"We're overjoyed at the success of Hima and reiterate that the government will provide all necessary support for her future endeavours. As part of this, we will develop the playground, library and naamghar in Kandhulimari," said the chief minister. He also met Hima's friends and her childhood group called 'Mon Jai' (I wish).
"It is a privilege to meet Hima's family and friends. I believe their constant support had played a big role in her meteoric rise," said Sonowal. He added that Hima's success has raised the stature of Assamese people across the world.
"Hima's feat inspires the Indians and the gold won by her proves that hard work, commitment and sincerity are the cornerstones of success," said Sonowal. He added that her accomplishment would continue to inspire the young generation.
The CM informed Hima's parents that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is elated with her success and has already expressed his sentiments at a public programme recently. Sonowal said the sprinter's achievement has given momentum to women empowerment in the country. He added that the state government would felicitate the sprint queen at a state level programme after she returns to Assam.
