GUWAHATI: In a successful operation, Assam railway police, on Wednesday, nabbed a woman from the Delhi-bound Rajdhani Express carrying 150 grams of cocaine worth Rs 30 lakh. The lady has been identified as Abitri Karmakar of the Haringhata area of West Bengal's Nadia district.
"Acting on a tip-off, the government railway police (GRP) personnel recovered 22 boxes of soap containing heroin from Karmakar.
She was trying to carry the contraband consignment to New Delhi. The consignment weighed around 150 grams and is worth at least Rs 30 lakhs," a top GRP official said.
After rounds of interrogation, Karmakar also gave information about the handler who gave her the drugs in Guwahati. Based on this, the cops launched a separate operation and nabbed Lalmalsawma from Bhangagarh area. He is a resident of West Phaileng, Mamit district, in Mizoram.
"Lalmalsawma brought the consignment from Mizoram to Guwahati and then handed it over to Karmakar. She was the carrier from Guwahati. Normally these carriers work in a chain from one person to another. The drug was first brought in by road to Assam from where it would have been sent to other places via the railways," the official added.
The incident comes a day after two siblings - Wabor Kharpuri Synrem and Darisha Synrem - were apprehended with at least 45 kilograms of cannabis. Both are residents of East Kashi hills in Meghalaya and were trying to carry the drug to Delhi. Last week too, 34,000 yaba tablets, popularly known as party drugs, were seized by city cops. They were brought into the city from Bangladesh.
Assam police has launched a drive to combat drugs that are smuggled into the city from neighbouring countries.
