HYDERABAD: Soon, many of Hyderabad’s top engineering colleges might get upgraded to deemed or private universities. According to information available with TOI, at least six A-grade institutions from the city have already approached authorities — state government for private and University Grants Commission (UGC) for deemed — seeking a revision in status that will allow them to define their own rules regarding student intake, fee structure, ability to issue own degrees, among other things.

On this list are: Chaitanya Bharati Institute of Technology (CBIT), Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Technology (MGIT), Anurag Group of Institutions, VNR Vignan Jyothi Institute of Engineering & Technology etc. All these colleges already have autonomous status granted by UGC and boast high ratings from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council.

Sources said, a majority of them are vying for deemed university tag as it attracts funding from UGC and offers better clarity in terms of regulations. “We would prefer deemed university status as UGC guidelines have more clarity regarding regulations issued by the state government. The GO issued on establishment of private university lack clarity on teacher recruitment, promotions and other rules,” said Ravinder Reddy, CBIT principal. Funding aside, global recognition is another reason drawing them to the deemed-to-be queue.
In fact, some colleges, such as Anurag Group of Institutions and VNR Vignan Jyothi Institute of Engineering & Technology, are planning to apply for both the statuses simultaneously. “We have more than 6,500 students and around 750 teaching and non-teaching staff with courses in engineering, business management and pharmacy. All courses are accredited and we have NIRF ranking of less than 200. By those means, we are eligible to apply for both deemed and private university statuses,” said Palla Rajeshwari Reddy, chairman of Anurag Group of Institutions.
According to sources, it is not just local colleges but also global institutions that have evinced their interest in setting up a private university in Telangana. “Once the government receives proposals from all institutions, expert committees will be constituted to verify them. Following this, the government will issue approvals to establish the university,” said an official from higher education department.
