GHMC gym project in East Marredpally picks up pace
HYDERABAD: Over two years after the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) embarked on a gym project in Teacher’s Colony, East Marredpally, it has finally been put on the fast track and is expected to be completed by end of this month, if civic officials are to be believed The project was abandoned midway after contractors awarded the project backed out due to the problems being created by the dwellers of the slums near the gym, civic officials said.

“Several thefts occurred at the construction site and construction material too was pilfered, which is why no contractor was coming forward to take up the project. Tenders had to be floated three times, resulting in the delay,” said a GHMC official on condition of anonymity.
Civic officials told TOI that not only has the project been put on the fast track so that it is constructed by the end of this month, it will also house a library.
The total construction cost of the gym was Rs 17 lakh, excluding the equipment. Before the construction began, GHMC sanctioned Rs 10,75,000 for the equipment but the amount was not released as the construction was not complete. Secunderabad Cantonment MLA G Sayanna also submitted a letter to the authorities urging it to speed up the gym project in that area.
According to residents, many people, especially youngsters, from Teachers Colony, Loya Nagar and Ambedkar Nagar will be benefited. “We request the authorities to complete the construction of the gym and provide us with the latest equipment. Youngsters will benefit the most from the project,” said Srinivas P, a cricket coach from East Marredpally.
Shanti Raju, a resident of Ambedkar Nagar, East Marredpally, said a dedicated civic committee headed by GHMC official must be formed to look after gym’s equipment and its maintenance.
Raising safety concerns, women from Teachers Colony demanded security measures, including CCTV cameras, at the gym once it is ready. “A dedicated security guard should be pressed into service at the gym, which should not turn into a place where people just gather and while away time,” said a woman pointing towards the slums nearby.
