HYDERABAD: A mentally unsound man has torched nine two-wheelers parked on the road at Afzal Sagar area in Mallepally on Saturday. Police arrested the man and he was sent in judicial remand to Chanchalguda prison.
At around 5.30am, locals alerted police control room about bikes being set on fire by unknown offenders at Afzal Sagar area. Police rushed to the spot and caught a 31-year-old man after he set ablaze ninth bike.
The accused was identified as Mohammed Ghouse Quadri, 31, a resident of Afzal Sagar.
“Mohammed Ghouse Quadri is married and he has children. Recently he became mentally unstable. Family members could not control him and as he was causing trouble for the neighbours, they complained to us on Friday,” Habeeb Nagar inspector T Amrutha Reddy said.
However, when police shifted Quadri to Institute of Mental Health in Erragadda, the doctors refused to admit him. “The superintendent wanted us to get a court order to admit Quadri. So we handed him over to the family on Friday night. In the early hours of Saturday, Quadri went berserk and started setting ablaze bikes parked on the road by cutting the fuel pipes,” the inspector said.
Police booked a case against Quadri under section 435 of the IPC and produced him before the court. Quadri was sent in judicial remand to Chanchalguda prison.
