HYDERABAD: With 46.6mm rainfall recorded up to 8.30am on Friday, Hyderabad broke a 100-year-old record of highest rainfall received during 24 hours for December. It was on December 1, 1918 that Hyderabad received 44.5mm rainfall.
According to the Telangana State Development Planning Society, districts surrounding Hyderabad such as Medchal-Malkajgiri, Sangareddy, Rangareddy received highest rainfall.
At 87.8mm, Kamkole in Sangareddy received the highest rainfall followed by Bollarum at 77.5mm in Medchal-Malkajgiri.
While the maximum temperature dropped to 28.7 degree Celsius, the minimum temperature recorded was 18.6 degree Celsius.
While low-lying areas were left inundated, the sudden downpour also led to power disruptions in many areas. “#hyderabadrains, slight showers and the power knocks off, no power since last night. Don't know when the power will be back. @TsspdclCorporat hopefully by today evening we can expect power back in our area i.e. Shyam Nagar Colony,” tweeted Shubhra Chandrani.

Complaints poured in as denizens yet again rued over the apathy by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation in their failure to maintain the roads and the drainage system. "Everytime rain occurs, condition of roads goes from bad to worse. Especially, in Secunderabad area where the GHMC has dug up at every nook and corner," said Ravi Kiran, a resident of Kapra.
The downpour has been attributed to the well-marked depression formed on southeast Bay of Bengal which intensified during Friday morning. With the depression expected to intensify further in a cyclonic storm, meteorologists have predicted rainfall activity to continue over Hyderabad and northern parts of Telangana. “It is very likely to intensify further into a cyclonic storm during next 12 hours and into a severe cyclonic storm in subsequent 36 hours.
