HYDERABAD: Less than two months after a man was hacked to death in broad daylight in Hyderabad’s Attapur area, another man was murdered in a similar fashion in the city on Wednesday night.
An auto-driver attacked a 35-year-old man with a butcher’s knife on one of the city’s busiest stretches near Madina crossroads in the old city at 7.30pm and killed him in full public view of hundreds of people.
Mohammed Abdul Kaja, 30, struck Shakir Qureshi numerous times with the knife, even daring to take a breaks between multiple attacks.
Passers-by made videos of the brutal murder but no one dared to intervene and stop the killing. Shockingly, videos being circulated on social media showed a handful of policemen barely meters away from the scene of the murder but they made no effort to stop Kaja as he openly brandished the knife. One traffic cop is seen making a feeble attempt to push Kaja away from the victim, but he immediately backs off.
Mirchowk police station inspector S Srinivas Goud said that Kaja overpowered Qureshi and virtually butchered him by the roadside. Police officers added that the two had a petty squabble. Initial investigation revealed that Qureshi had given Kaja his autorickshaw on rent. Kaja had passed on the auto to another person which upset Qureshi.
The two met on Wednesday evening to settle the dispute but ended up having an argument. Kaja claims that Qureshi abused him and his family. Police officials say Qureshi, who was also a butcher by profession, was carrying a knife on him, which Kaja snatched and killed him.
Videos show Kaja repeatedly kicking the body and walking around in his blood-stained shirt. “I don’t mind if I am hanged,” he is heard saying in Hindi and staring blankly at onlookers.

It was only after local policemen reached in large numbers that the accused was taken into custody. He did not even resist the cops as they took him away. Both men are residents of Chanchalguda. Deputy commissioner of police (south zone) Ambar Kishor Jha told TOI that they questioning the accused for more details.
An official statement of the Hyderabad police released at 10.15pm on Wednesday read, “In Mirchowk police station limits one murder occurred just now. Because of immediate response by a constable, accused was arrested within 10 minutes from the spot.” The video, however, contradicts the police statement.
