Pregnant Women Forced To Climb Stairs
HYDERABAD: Swanky Modern Government Maternity Hospital, Petlaburj which caters to around 1,500 patients daily, has four lifts, but none of them is functional. The hospital serves 700-800 out-patients and about 500-800 in-patients, including paediatric cases, every day.
About two months ago, when TOI visited the hospital, just one of the four lifts at the building was working, which has also joined the ‘out of order’ ones now, forcing patients, including pregnant women and new mothers, to take the stairs or ramp.

The area in front of the lifts has been closed using interlocking barricades or a string of waiting chairs. Patient attendants were seen using the space for lounging around or having food. “One of the lifts was repaired a few months ago, but it develops glitches regularly. Now, not a single lift is working. The situation has been like this for over 10 months now. At times, we see new mothers and senior citizens accompanying patients struggle with the climb,” a senior doctor at the hospital said.
While it was meant to be a state-of-the-art facility, after a hurried re-location of the hospital to the Nayapul building (current one), maintenance work has taken a beating. The lifts of a prominent company have never been through any maintenance work. Till recently, the only operational lift was crammed beyond capacity.
A part of the problem is that the Petlaburj hospital authorities only have partial control on the building as the third and fourth floors are still with the Osmania General Hospital.
