Telangana: 'Green walkathon' organised on World Environment Day
HYDERABAD: A 'green walkathon' was held on the occasion of World Environment Day in Nallagandla-Tellapur area. Several locals took to walking to protect environment and their health in the backdrop of the pandemic.
The walkathon was held at Urban Forestry Nursery, Tellapur under the care of HMDA. “We wanted to highlight the need for green spaces in Urban areas,” said Tejaswi, of the DISHA Collective which organized the walk with the support of the HMDA.
“The significance of this walk apparent with the pandemic looming over us. We cannot remain in lockdown forever. The next best thing we can do is build our immunity and that is only possible by preserving our environment and health.”
Residents cooped up in their apartments got a chance to walk around the outer ring of the nursery which is about 5km. Social distance was maintained as people walked and enjoyed the biodiversity at their own pace.
“This walk is being planned every year to coincide with world environment day. Events like this help raise awareness about urban forests. What was surprising is that they were few people who were even aware of this lung space, inspite of living in its vicinity,” said Sowjanya Kolluri, a resident of Tellapur.
