Manipur, Nagaland women call for calm
IMPHAL: Amid growing apprehension in Manipur over the fallout of the peace talks between the Centre and the NSCN (I-M) on the state, a team representing the most powerful women's organisation in Nagaland met with their Manipur counterpart here and said they wanted permanent peace between the two fractious neighbours.
A six-member delegation of the Nagaland-based Naga Mothers' Association (NMA) met with leaders of Manipur's Meira Paibi Lups (women's vigil groups), as well as the Coordination Committee on Manipur Integrity (Cocomi), here on Tuesday evening.
Notably, both women's groups were joint winners of TOI's 'Lifetime Achievement Peace Award 2013'.
NMA president Abieu Mero said her primary aim in visiting Imphal was to bring a message of peace, something that women in both states - scarred by insurgency and retaliatory state action - wanted. "Ever since our groups bagged the award, we have been in touch with each other," Mero said. NMA adviser Rosemary said Tuesday's meeting discussed the hardships faced by women owing to heavy militarization in both states. She added that it also deliberated on the misunderstandings between the people of the two states because of the Naga peace process.
The Meira Paibi leaders also called for peace and said they did not see any community as an adversary. "Any initiative taken up within Nagaland as a result of the Naga peace talk would be warmly welcomed, but the settlement should not compromise Manipur's integrity and identity," they asserted.
