INDORE: Packaged Gangajal bottles from Gangotri flew off the shelves of post office in just two weeks of sawan amid huge demand from devotees from Indore and nearby areas.
A few early birds were lucky to grab the packaged bottles coming right from the origin of Ganga while many had to be left empty-handed as demand surpassed supply during the peak demand season.
Mahesh Tiwari, a retired government teacher from Shivaji Nagar grabbed two bottles at one go the moment he sighted the stock.

Tiwari said, “I was planning to get Gangajal since long but in my age it’s not possible to go to pilgrimages often. The moment I got to know about the stock at post office, I grabbed two bottles. It feels like an achievement to get the purest form of Gangajal directly from Gangotri.”
Devotees mostly prefer Gangajal from Gangotri than any other places like Haridwar or Varanasi, said officials from post office.
Unlike Tiwari, many had to return empty-handed as supply was very thin as compared to demand.
Raghunath Rastogi visited the GPO four times during the sawan month hoping to get at least one bottle of Gangajal but he could not get any as the stock vanished within just a few weeks.
Indore postal department had ordered for 2,000 bottles of Gangajal but received just 532 bottles.
MK Shrivas, senior superintendent, postal department Indore said, “We saw people walking every day enquiring about Gangajal but stocks were limited and everything vanished in just 2 weeks against our anticipation.”
Gangajal is currently out of stock while still around 5 to 8 people are walking in with demand, according to postal department. The department expect demand to continue in the festive season.
