Recent rain in the region gives Indore farmers hope of good yield

INDORE: Recent rains have given wings to hopes of good fortune for farmers. The showers are seen adding moisture to the soil after a prolonged dry spell, which is likely to aid growth and flowering of standing pulses, soyabean and cotton crops.
According to the weatherman, Indore till 5pm received 10.4 mm rainfall on Sunday.
Agriculture department initiated a field survey in Indore district to study crop status.The survey suggested recent rounds of spells to help increase yield of standing kharif or summer crops.
Agriculture department Indore joint director Rewasingh Sisodia said, “Rains were long awaited in the region and this pattern of rainfall is very beneficial as water will penetrate deep into the soil helping proper development of crops.”
Agriculture experts said rainfall during development stage of crops is likely to increase yield of summer crops.
A prolong dry spell after plantation of summer sown crops had raised worries among farmers over poor growth and yield of crop. Delay in onset of monsoon pushed summer sowing to first week of July, experts said.
Sisodia said, “All crops will be benefitted by this rains but standing crop of cotton and pulses will have more advantage.”
According to Indore agriculture department, cotton is likely to be sown on over 5 lakh hectare while soyabean is seen covering around 10 lakh hectare. Total area under kharif sowing in Indore division is around 22 lakh hectare.
MP Cotton Association president Kailash Agrawal said, “Rains were awaited for so long. Rainfall will help in increasing productivity of crops.”
