Thirty 'unsafe' institutes asked to shut down
INDORE: Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) on Friday issued closure notices to 30 educational institutions, mostly coaching centres operating in congested areas for failing to abide by fire safety and emergency norms.
The list also includes around half a dozen private institutions, which were found to be running in buildings that do not fulfil basic fire safety norms.
The action comes two weeks after at least 20 people were killed in a massive fire that broke out at a four-storeyed building, housing a coaching centre in Surat.

IMC had the very next day launched a survey operation to check if educational institutes operational in multi-storeyed buildings fulfil fire safety and emergency norms.
"None of these 30 institutions fulfil basic fire safety and emergency norms as prescribed under Land Development Rules 2012, on basis of which closure notices have been issued to all these institutions," said IMC commissioner Asheesh Singh.
He said that during the survey, it was found that there is no scope of improvement in any of the buildings, where these institutions are running. So all of them have been instructed to
shut down and vacate space within 24 hours. Apart from issuing notices to these 30 institutions, the civic body has also shortlisted over 120 institutions, which do not have adequate fire safety and emergency arrangements. Officials however found that there is a scope of improvement in buildings, where these institutions are being run.
"These institutions will also be given notices to improve fire safety arrangements within a week. Upon failure, similar action would be initiated against them as well," they added.
