Vision back, four patients discharged from hospital

Vision back, four patients discharged from hospital
Indore: Four patients admitted to Choithram Eye Hospital following infection after botched-up cataract surgeries were discharged on Friday after gaining their vision back.
The patients include Sushilabai, Ramibai, Shanta Bai, and Kali Bai – all from Dhar. Condition of other four was also said to be improving. One of them is expected to be discharged on Saturday.
“We hope to discharge the other four within two-three days,” said Choithram Eye Hospital managing trustee Ashwini Verma.
Health and family welfare minister Tulsiram Silawat, who was present during discharge of the four patients, appreciated the work of the team of doctors, who treated and took care of the patients. “It’s only the outcome of genuine efforts and hard work of doctors that these patients have gained their vision back,” said the minister.
Silawat also hoped for speedy recovery of other patients and assured of possible assistance. “We are working on forming a set of guidelines, which will be made compulsory for all eye hospitals of the state. This incident has taught us a lesson and we are not going to let anything like this happen again,” he said.
“Strict action would be taken after getting test reports of samples collected from operation theatre of the hospital, where the patients developed infection,” he added. He however did not say what action is being taken against the hospital management.
The team was headed by Dr Rajeev Raman, an eye specialist called from Shakara Netralaya, Chennai to treat 13 patients, who earlier underwent small incision cataract surgery at Indore Netra Chikitsalay after which they complained of loss of vision.
Of these, eight were admitted to Choithram Eye Hospital and five were sent to Sankar Netralaya, Chennai. Of these five, three had to undergo artificial cornea transplantation and one had evisceration. Doctors said that other one might also have to undergo evisceration as the condition of his affected eye is not improving. “We are doing our best to treat all patients,” they said.
