ITANAGAR: Days after police found a half-burnt body of a woman near Hawa Camp in Arunachal's Papum Pare district, the murder case was solved with the arrest of the main suspect at Ziro in Lower Subansiri.
On May 16, the body was found near the camp under Kimin Police Station and identified later as that of Alef Basumatary from Milanpur village in Assam's Biswanath district.
"Her family identified her by her ear rings, hair clip, sandals and a scar on her left toe," Capital SP Tumme Amo, who is also in charge of the Papum Pare police station, said.
While there were no clues to start the investigation on, Amo said that by following inputs from Assam Police and establishing a few connections, police located the house of the suspect on Saturday.
The deceased was reportedly acquainted with the accused, Taku Mompa, for about a year. Alef had brought one Rani Narzary from her village on May 5 to work as a domestic help at her house. Rani put up at Taku's with her children, a five-year-old daughter and a four-year-old son. After a while, Taku reportedly did not allow Rani to see her children. They had a fight and Rani left for her village on May 12, forced to leave her kids behind.
The following day, Rani asked Alef to help her get her kids back. On May 15, Alef went over to Taku's house but could not meet her. They spoke over the phone and Taku agreed to return Rani's children. When Alef's husband called her, the phone was switched off.
The following day, her body, with 90% burns, was found with gunshot wounds.
One NP.25 bore pistol and a live round were recovered from Taku's house. During the joint interrogation on Sunday, the suspect revealed that she had hidden one .25 pistol at her house and accordingly it was seized in the evening along with two mobile sets, the SP added.
