ITANAGAR: A man from Assam was on Sunday arrested at Dichu in Arunachal Pradesh, the last border post along the Line of Actual Control, on suspicion of working as a spy for Pakistan intelligence, police confirmed on Wednesday.
Nirmal Rai, from Ambikapur in Sadiya in Assam's Tinsukia district, worked as a porter at Kibithu, the easternmost populated area of India, and Dichu, sources said.
Nirmal was arrested by Army personnel and handed over to Arunachal Pradesh police the following day. Confirming the arrest, DGP SBK Singh said, "Rai is being questioned by various intelligence and security agencies." He did not divulge details, saying that nothing more can be shared until investigation goes further.
An Army source said Rai was arrested under the provisions of Official Secrets Act, Section 120B of the IPC (criminal conspiracy) and Section 72 of the IT Act (breach of confidentiality and privacy), adding that his smartphone has been seized.
Before coming to Arunachal Pradesh, Rai used to work in Dubai between April 2016 and April 2018. After being recruited by a Dubai-based handler from the Inter-Services Intelligence, he was trained and sent to Arunachal to work as a porter for the Indian Army, the source said. He was under the Army intelligence radar for more than a month after reports of his "suspicious behaviour".
"Rai was involved in passing on sensitive information on locations and deployment of army units, weapon profiles of army units and deployment of artillery guns at Kibithu," an Army source said. "He was also sharing information on locations of Advanced Landing Ground, helipads and helicopters, bridges and infrastructure development along the LAC," the source added.
