ITANAGAR: Former Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Nabam Tuki has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reconsider the decision to push through the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, keeping in mind the greater interest of the indigenous people of the country, especially the northeast.
In a letter to Modi on Monday last, Tuki stated, "The passing of the bill in the Lok Sabha and the developments related to it in the northeastern states are a matter of serious concern."
"The hurry in which the bill was passed in the Lok Sabha ahead of the ensuing Parliamentary election was avoidable.
The rights, privileges and sentiments of the indigenous people of the northeast have been neglected," the Congress MLA said. "The Union government should have been more sensitive to the people of the northeast, keeping in mind their separate origins, identities, nature, culture and demography," he added.
He further said that the Centre, which is supposed to preserve, protect and safeguard the uniqueness and characteristics of the protected tribes of Arunachal Pradesh and other northeastern states, cannot be at mercy of the largesse provided by the government.
