Jaipur girl creates font inspired by city's heritage

For many, the heritage, culture and architecture of their hometowns play a role in shaping their personality. When Mehek Bapna, a 17-year-old high schooler currently living in the US, thought of paying tribute to her hometown, Jaipur, she came up with a font inspired by the Pink City. Mehek, who studies in Southwest High, lives in Minneapolis with her parents who are Professors at the Carlson School of Management, University of Minnesota.

She often visits her hometown during vacations to meet her grandparents and the extended family. Her love for the city inspired her to make the font.
Mehek tells us, “I am concerned about the effects of modernisation on the traditional motifs, designs and architectural elements of the city, which is why I have created a font which retains the feel and beauty of Jaipur.” She adds, “It’s my way of preserving our culture. The font is even named Jaipuri, so it highlights the elements of the old city.”
The font, which has features like curved brackets and geometric designs, is a gift for her dadi sa and others like her who love the city. Mehek says she is focusing on sharing the font with online users to make it more popular and bring it into mainstream usage. “I want more people to know about it and I will try to get poets to use the font in their tweets and Insta messages,” Mehek says.
