Liquor smugglers use ambulance again; two held with 60 cartons

Liquor smugglers use ambulance again; two held with 60 cartons
Ambulance seized in Taranagar on Saturday
JAIPUR: The liquor and narcotics smugglers in Churu seem to have made ambulances a regular means to smuggle their consignments. Yet another attempt of smugglers to carry illegal liquor was foiled by the Taranagar police on Saturday. This was the fourth instance in past three months in which a contraband ambulance was used to ferry liquor. Police have also arrested two persons with an illegal possession of 60 cartons of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL).

Churu police have been active ever since the announcement of election dates and had raided private buses, trucks and other vehicles and have seized almost 1,000 cartons of IMFL so far.
“This is the new trend. Smugglers believe that police won’t stop an ambulance. But learning from past experiences, we are checking the ambulances which are not carrying any patients. It is not good to stop an ambulance carrying patients, still the SHOs concerned have been directed to stay vigilant,” said Ramamurthy Joshi, superintendent of police, Churu, told TOI over the phone. He said that in the past, private ambulances were seized by the police in which narcotics and liquor were being smuggled.
Senior police officers said the first such case was difficult to crack. But after three such cases were witnessed, the private vehicles having ambulance tag and which are moving without any patients in them, are being checked. “In the past one month, we have seized vehicles on which the smugglers had pasted a sticker saying “on election duty” and some private buses and trucks in which liquor was concealed in specially constructed compartments,” Joshi added.
