JAIPUR: Relatives of the patient who was beaten up by a doctor in Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital have refused to register complaint against the doctor, urging doctors to allow them to go home to celebrate Eid on Wednesday. A video of the doctor beating the patient had gone viral on Monday.
The patient’s relatives have given in writing, addressing the station house officer, Moti Doongri police station, that they did not want to register any complaint.
TOI has the possession of the factual report prepared by SMS Hospital and the letter written by the patient’s attendant, which is part of the factual report.
Twenty-six-year-old Mubarak, was admitted to the hospital with acute gastroenteritis on June 1. He is still undergoing treatment at 1C ward of SMS Hospital. Talking to TOI, Mubarak’s brother-in-law Shahid, said, “We are fruit vendors and sell fruits in streets. We want to celebrate Eid, so we have asked the doctors to allow us to go. Mubarak is fine now. I thank all the doctors for the treatment.”
Mubarak’s video is also circulating in which he is apologising with the doctors.
The doctor who thrashed the patient claimed that his action was impulsive and he did not want to beat the patient intentionally. “When the patient was brought to the hospital, he was quite aggressive. I asked first-year resident doctor to take his sample of blood. When he went to take the sample, the patient slapped her twice. Again, when another first-year resident doctor went to collect the sample, he slapped him too. His behaviour was not normal. He was roaming around the ward and disturbing other patients as well. When he thrashed the doctors, I tried to calm him down but he attacked me too. In the process, my spectacles fell on the ground. I had no intention to slap him, it was all unintentional,” Dr Sunil Kumar, II-year resident doctor, who was seen in the video thrashing the patient, told TOI.

In the factual report prepared by the hospital administration, statements of 10 persons are there, including three doctors, one nurse, one ward boy, one security guard and three attendants and patients already admitted to the hospital.
In all the statements, there is one common thing, which is that they all maintained that it was the patient who was aggressive and was misbehaving with other patients and slapped the doctors as well. One of the patients’ relative, who was at 1C ward when the incident happened, Ramswaroop Yadav said, “When he came to the ward, he started disturbing other patients. But, he had not beaten any patient or any of their attendants.”
However, doctors also claimed that the patient reached the hospital with acute gastroenteritis and unknown drug abuse. He might be behaving abnormally because of some unknown drug abuse, which could be possible due to some medication he must have taken from outside for his treatment, before reaching SMS Hospital.
SMS Hospital superintendent Dr DS Meena said, “They have sent the factual report to the disciplinary committee constituted at the SMS medical college level, which is looking into the matter.” Mubarak is undergoing treatment in a ward . It is overcrowded so doctors accommodate patients on attendants’ benches.
