Suspended IAS officer sent to judicial custody
JAIPUR: Former IAS officer BB Mohanty, who was arrested for the rape of a 23-year-old girl, was produced before the court and sent to judicial custody till December 7.
Assistant commissioner of police (ACP) circle Sodala, Nem Singh said Mohanty was produced before the court where he was sent to 14-day judicial custody. The police said they interrogated Mohanty in detail about his whereabouts and hiding places since 2014.
BB Mohanty had surrendered before the police on Monday night, after which he was arrested.
He was on the run since 2014. The 1977 batch IAS officer was chairman of the Rajasthan Civil Service Appellate Tribunal when in January 2014, a woman filed a case against him alleging that Mohanty raped and sexually exploited her for seven months, after promising to help her clear civil services examination.
The woman, who hails from Uttar Pradesh, had alleged she was raped for the first time at a flat occupied by the official on February 19, 2013. The flat near New Sanganer Road was situated hardly 200 meters from her hostel. She had alleged that Mohanty developed a friendship with her since they used to stay nearby. Over the next few months, the IAS officer allegedly took her to several places –including Udaipur, Goa, Chennai and Bharatpur where they stayed in hotels and he sexually exploited her.
In 2015, the state government had suspended him over allegations of sexual misconduct. Despite several summons, he had failed to appear before the police for inquiry. When the police quizzed the IAS officer for the first time on Tuesday, he claimed that he was not in the right frame of mind.
