KANPUR: Police have arrested one Jagdamba for murdering and burying the body of his 23-year-old sister in his house and later disposing it off by cremating it at a city ghat seven years ago, in a case of honour killing.
The crime was allegedly committed in 2011, in Om Purwa locality under Chakeri police station here.
“However, the crime came to light after Jagdamba was nabbed for killing a property dealer Ranvijay Rajput, whose body was recovered from his house on July 11, 2018,” said a police official.
Jagdamba had used an iron road to kill his sister Asha alias Dolly and buried her body in his backyard. Later, in the year 2013, he again dug up the body and cremated it at the Batkeshwar Ghat.
On Thursday, after a tip-off, police turned up at Jagdamba’s house and dug up the place to recover Asha’s belongings including her clothes and bangles. Speaking to TOI, superintendent of police (East) Anurag Arya said, “We have arrested Jagdamba and an investigation is on into the matter. He along with his aide Chaman Prakash and one other had committed this crime. We have arrested Chaman and will arrest the third accused soon.”
According to sources, Jagdamba’s mother and wife tipped-off the police about the incident. Jagdamba confessed of murdering his sister. “She was on the wrong track, which is the reason why I murdered her. I did it to protect my honour,” he said.
“My sister was 23 years old and was in relationship with a man from the locality,” Jagdamba told investigators.
