Aquatic show, music night mark Dweep formation day

KAVARATTI: The celebrations organized as part of Lakshadweep formation day concluded at Kavaratti on Friday night. The Sufi music night led by Kannur Sheriff was the final event of the celebrations which went for three days.
During the celebrations on Thursday, the administrator of the UT Farooq Khan had announced government jobs for sportspersons from Lakshadweep who excel in national and international sports events.
He also announced compensation for the families of those who go missing in the sea while fishing.
A display of parasailing marked the beginning of the aquatic show in which youths lined up in kayaks, jet skis, catamarans et al to display the skills of the Islanders in water sports.
A team of students from Andaman and Nicobar Islands visiting the Islands of Lakshadweep as part of a cultural exchange programme also took part in the event.
People from all 10 inhabited islands of the archipelago had also come together at Kavaratti where the celebrations took place.
The Archipelago of Lakshadweep, about 400 Kilometres off the Kochi coast was formed into a UT in 1956. The formation day which falls on November 1, became a big event after the UT administration decided to offer the Islanders a day to celebrate their rich culture, three years ago.
