DRI seizes 4.9kg gold at Cial

Officials from directorate of revenue intelligence seized 4.9kg of gold from two passengers, who landed at Cochin International Airport Ltd (Cial) from Riyadh and Sharjah on Wednesday.

KOCHI: Officials from directorate of revenue intelligence seized 4.9kg of gold from two passengers, who landed at Cochin International Airport Ltd (Cial) from Riyadh and Sharjah on Wednesday.
According to the sleuths, the total value of the contraband was estimated to be around Rs 1.55 crore. Smugglers had used cloth belts to tie the gold around their waists. Customs sleuths, meanwhile, have seized over 2kg of the contraband in eight separate cases over past one week.
Man sentenced to life for abusing daughter: Special Court at Ernakulam, on Wednesday, sentenced a 32-year-old West Bengal native who abused his 12-year-old daughter for life imprisonment.
Additional sessions Judge P J Vincent found the accused guilty of IPC sections 376, 354, 506 and provisions of the Pocso Act and sentenced the accused to life and a rigorous imprisonment for 10 years. A fine of Rs 30,000 has also been imposed. The case pertains to the abuse of a 12-year-old by her father along with three other accused at his residence in Aluva during 2013 and 2015. The abuse came to light when the survivor revealed the episode to her class teacher. The other three accused in the case were yet to be caught.
Doctor found dead: A doctor from Dehradun, working with a hospital in the city was found dead in a hotel room on Wednesday.
Priyang Bijluwal, who had worked with the department of urology at private hospital in the city was found dead on Wednesday morning.
Ernakulam central police have registered a case of unnatural death and a probe is going on. According to police, the doctor seems to have committed suicide by injecting himself with a poisonous drug.
