People of Lakshadweep celebrate formation day
Kavaratti: The people of Lakshadweep celebrated the formation day of their Union Territory with much fervour on Thursday.
It was only three years ago that the administration of the archipelago decided to start celebrating the formation day, in a bid to increase the awareness among the younger generation of islanders about their culture and history.
“The idea was to dedicate a day to celebrate the identity and culture of the islanders,” said Mohammed Qureishi, publicity officer of Lakshadweep administration.

On Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day) celebrations on Wednesday, platoons of the Navy, Indian Reserve Battalion, Coast Guard, Lakshadweep Police, NCC, NSS, Scouts and Guides and school and college students took part in the march led by the Administrator of the UT, Farooq Khan.
Other dignitaries including, MP of Lakshadweep Mohammed Faizal PP, advisor to the Administrator Vivek Pandey IAS, collector Vijendra Singh Rawat, S Asker Ali IAS, president-cum-chief counsellor Hassan Badumuka Gothi, education secretary A Hamza and Kavaratti chairperson T Abdulkhader took part in the function.
On Thursday, the Administrator unfurled the national flag to mark the beginning of the formation day celebrations. Cutlural programmes by renowned artists as well as local people were held. Parasailing, kayaking, canoe racing competitions and marathon were also held.
