Army commander reviews security in Nagaland, meets locals
KOLKATA: Solutions to all problems of the region will have to be within the framework of the Constitution, Lt Gen M M Naravane, GOC-in-C, Eastern Command, told locals in Nagaland during his two-day visit to the state recently.
The General said this during his visit to the border town of Tuensang, where he interacted with representatives of the state government, the Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organisation (ENPO) and others.
The ENPO has been demanding a separate state for the Eastern Nagas.
While interacting with locals, Lt Gen Naravane highlighted the border management and counter-insurgency roles of the Assam Rifles and said that the force will continue to aid various development projects in the remote area. The civil administration and locals will also have to be a part of the development process and make collective efforts for the same.
Tuensang is the headquarters of a district that shares its boundary with Myanmar. Recently, the Army announced additional infrastructure for the Assam Rifles to strengthen defences along the Indo-Myanmar border.
While empathizing with demands of the locals, Naravane said: “In today’s world of globalization, while respecting each other’s sensibilities, customs and uniqueness, we all have to prosper and develop together as a Nation.” The Army commander also called on Nagaland chief minister Neiphiu Rio and assured him the whole-hearted support and cooperation of the Assam Rifles to promote peace and development in the region.
