KOLKATA: Atleast two students have qualified in the top 50 ranks from Bengal in the AIIMS MBBS entrance examination 2019, which was held on May 25 and May 26. Hemant Khandelia and Anustup Bhattacharyya are both students of South Point High School and have ranked 28 and 47 respectively.
"The two are among the top 50 and are sure to find a seat in AIIMS Delhi - one of the best medical teaching institutes in the country.
Other, too, might have ranked from the state but we are yet to find out," said a senior health department official.
Khandelia, who is a resident of Picnic Garden, had also ranked 11th in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET). The excellent ranks have taken his parents by surprise. "They are super happy for my achievement," said Hemant while talking to TOI over phone. Khandelia now plans to go to study in New Delhi AIIMS. "I have been inspired by the doctors, who had treated me since my childhood," he added.
Hemant has kept his options for specialization open. "I will study with a lot of focus over the next three years and then take a call. But my personal choice will be to specialize in neurology or oncology," he said.
His friend and batchmate Bhattacharya is also planning to take admissions in AIIMS, New Delhi. "It is the best institute in the country. There is a huge scope to improve in academics. The infrastructure is very good. There will be more scope for research and pursuing studies abroad," said the 47th rank holder, who was motivated by his father and grandfather - both of whom are doctors.
Sunil Agarwal, centre director of Aakash Institute, which has been instrumental in the success of both the students said: "It takes a lot of dedication, discipline and hard work to crack the national entrance examinations, which are highly competitive. The students who have managed to secure good ranks are focused."
