KOLKATA: A day after several candidates appearing for a written examination for recruitment in the rank of constable of Bengal police were arrested for carrying bluetooth devices in their shoes — with 42 arrests in 28 FIRs — the CID on Monday took over the investigation. The examinees were caught with bluetooth receivers concealed in credit cards hidden in shoes.
The arrests were primarily carried out in North 24 Parganas, North Dinajpur and Burdwan.

CID sources said they believe an organized syndicate was behind the malpractice. The candidates were asked to pay Rs 50,000 so dummy candidates could write the exams. These dummy candidates were using bluetooth and headphones to get answer codes from outside, sources said.
“During checking, receivers and earpieces were seized from several candidates in various venues. The device was to be connected to a cellphone operated by accomplices outside the examination premises,” said DIG (operations) Nishat Pervez.
Asked how the system worked, an officer explained, “A trainer or a good student fills up the exam form, gets a genuine admit card and starts solving questions. After an hour or so, he goes to the toilet and sends bulk answer keys to the operating centre from where answers are circulated to halls through bluetooth.”
