KOLKATA: The Border Security Force (BSF) seized 24 kg of marijuana (ganja) in two separate raids along the Indo-Bangladesh border in Nadia and North 24-Parganas on Monday. In the first, troops of the 43Bn BSF posted at the Narsaripara Border Outpost (BOP) in the Hugalberia police station area of Nadia received information of an attempt to smuggle narcotics across the border into Bangladesh.
A special operation was launched and BSF personnel spotted suspicious movement near a banana plantation around 10.40 pm.

“The miscreants were challenged by the BSF party but they fled in the darkness taking advantage of the dense foliage. While fleeing, they dropped the loads they were carrying on their heads. During a search, four gunny sacks were seized. They contained 16 kg of ganja. The material was handed over to the customs office at Karimpur,” a senior BSF official said.
In the second incident, troops of the 99Bn BSF from BOP Magurkona in the Bagdah police station area of North 24-Parganas were alerted of drug-running in their area of operations. Around 9.30 pm, the troops spotted suspicious movement close to the international border and challenged the miscreants. The smugglers fled after dropping eight packets of ganja weighing nearly 8 kg. These were deposited at the Bagdah police station by the BSF.
In 2017, the BSF’s South Bengal Frontier has seized 515.77 Kgs of Ganja during various raids. Three Indian and two Bangladeshi nationals have also been apprehended on charges of smuggling the narcotics.
