CVC asked it to probe cops, CBI may tell SC
Kolkata: CBI is likely to submit a report to the Supreme Court when the contempt petition against the Bengal chief secretary, DGP and Kolkata Police commissioner comes up for hearing next week, saying that it was asked by Central Vigilance Commission to investigate the role of police officers allegedly involved in “distortion of Saradha probe”.
The agency may also inform the SC that police commissioner Rajeev Kumar had said during his recent questioning in Shillong that he did not look into the day-to-day probe of the Special Investigation Team formed to probe the Saradha scam.
Kumar was the commissioner of Bidhannagar Police when the scam came to light.
According to CBI officers, the August 2017 CVC letter had asked the agency to take “necessary action” and investigate the roles of police officers who had “distorted the Saradha probe”.
It had prompted the agency to probe the role of at least three IPS officers, including Kumar, following which a summons was sent to Arnab Ghosh, then additional deputy commissioner of Bidhannagar Commissionerate.
“The agency wanted to question Ghosh in connection with the Saradha probe, but he moved court,” CBI lawyer Amajit Dey said. The CBI believes interrogation of some of the junior officers will bring more clarity to the investigation.
Bengal Police, on the other hand, has dug up a complaint sent by one of its officers to market watchdog Sebi in 2009 highlighting the mushrooming growth of Ponzi firms in the state. This, sources said, is in line with the argument put forward by Kumar during his interrogation that spotting the growth of Ponzi firms was primarily the job of Sebi and RBI. The FIRs and chargesheets filed by Bengal Police in the Rose Valley case may also be cited when the matter comes up for hearing at the apex court, the sources said.
