KOLKATA: Commuters are likely to be inconvenienced from Monday with Metro Railway reducing the number of weekday services from 300 to 284 for nearly a month. This is necessary for yard remodeling at the Mahanayak Uttam Kumar station. The authorities, however, are trying to keep services normal during peak hours.
The new schedule will continue till December 21. Due to this, the last trains from Kavi Subhas and Dum Dum will start at 9.48pm instead of 9.49pm.
There will be no change in weekend services though.

The yard remodeling will not only reduce travel time but also allow more flexibility. Later, more than 300 services will be possible provided there are sufficient rakes, an official said.
“There is a speed restriction of 20 km/hr between the Netaji and Mahanayak Uttam Kumar stations due to a sharp curve. This curve will be done away with following which trains will be able to run at a speed up to 55 km/hr. After work is completed, trains passing this stretch will save at least a minute. We may also be able to add more services provided there are sufficient rakes,” Metro Railway CPRO Indrani Banerjee said.
Major work is being undertaken at the Y-siding beyond Mahanayak Uttam Kumar station as well. The siding is being extended and an additional line added. This would allow the movement of rakes from both directions at the siding. A rake would also be stabled at the siding for emergencies. In case of any disruption, there would be no need for a rake to arrive from the Kavi Subhas or Dum Dum ends. The stabled rake would be placed into service immediately.
A derailing switch will also be inserted at the Y-siding. This switch will aid in reducing glitches at the points where a rake is moved from one track to another. The time taken to reverse rakes will also be reduced.
