KOLKATA: The tallest building in Kolkata, The 42, caught fire on Saturday evening. Amid a panic that gripped the Chowringhee neighbourhood, three fire engines rushed to the spot to douse the flames. According to fire services department and Kolkata Police sources it was a challenging job for the firefighters to control the flames that could be seen on the 62-storey residential tower.
Fortunately, it took firefighters and technicians at work on the upper floors around nine minutes to douse the flames.
The fire was detected around 5pm. State fire services minister and city mayor Sovan Chatterjee visited spot and said, “The fire seems to have spread through the nylon nets used to guard the air-conditioning machines. Firefighters responded fast and brought the blaze under control. There is no reason to panic now .
A senior official, on behalf of the builders, said the fire was accidental. “While welding work was in progress at our site, the safety net had caught fire. But it was brought under control by our efficient team at the site,” the official said.
A visit to the site by a TOI team revealed that the entire Chowringhee neighbourhood, especially the traders of Little Russell Street, were still panicstricken. “I rushed out of my shop hearing shouts and saw that some of the upper floors had caught fire. The scene was frightening for passers-by who had queued up in front of the Little Russell Street entrance to the tower. Fortunately, three fire engines arrived on time and could douse the flames fairly fast,” said Suresh Singh, owner of a shop on Little Russell Street.
