KOLKATA: Injured NRS Hospital intern Paribaha Mukhopadyay remained stable on Thursday at Institute of Neurosciences Kolkata (INK) and could be released in two days. According to INK sources, Mukhopadhyay — whose skull had been dented by a stone on Tuesday — will need another surgery in three months to replace the fractured part of his bone that had to be removed through an operation on Tuesday.

“Mukhopadhyay will have to undergo a cranioplasty to replace the injured part of the skull bone that has been removed.
But the procedure can only be done after he has recovered sufficiently which could be another three months,” said Partha Ghosh, one of the doctors who operated on the intern.
But Mukhopadhyay has responded well to treatment, Ghosh added. “He had normal food and spoke to his family on Thursday. He is stable but not out of danger yet. There is always a risk of an infection after a major brain surgery like the one he has undergone. A part of his skull had to be removed. So, he will remain under observation,” said Ghosh.
The intern was brutally assaulted along with his colleague Yash Tekwani who is now under observation at the NRS Medical College ICU. He will not require any surgery, though.
Mukhopadhyay has not been told about Thursday’s events. “It could adversely affect his health. His condition remains vulnerable and stress could be dangerous for him at this stage. So, he is barred from interacting with his colleagues,” Ghosh said.
A team of four doctors, in a three-hour procedure, operated on him on Tuesday. Led by Hrishikesh Kumar, the doctors repaired the dent. An incision was made to repair the dent without taking off the skull bone. “It was similar to what is done to repair a car dent. The difference was that we made a hole and corrected the depression. The procedure is called elevation of depressed fracture of skull,” Kumar said.
