Jadavpur University students plan screening of 'Ram Ke Naam'

KOLKATA: The documentary, 'Ram Ke Naam', which created a controversy during its screening at the University of Hyderabad, will now be screened by the students of film studies department of Jadavpur University. The documentary will be shown outside the World View on August 26 from 6pm.
"The director, Anand Patwardhan, is a prominent personality. The students should get an opportunity to watch his work," said a student of the department.
Another student added, "There will be no tickets and everyone will be able to watch it.Let the students themselves judge the merit of the film."
In 2016, a screening of the Vivek Agnihotri's film 'Buddha in a Traffic Jam' sparked ruckus on Jadavpur University campus.
Last week, during a screening of "Ram Ke Naam" in the University of Hyderabad, police entered the classroom and allegedly confiscated a laptop and detained students after it was alleged that the documentary was being screened without permission by the authorities.
"Whenever we receive any such request to screen a movie by students, we forward it to respective heads of departments to look into the content and grant permission. I am unaware of any such movie being screened by students," said registrar Snehamanju Basu.
The head of the film studies department, Madhuja Mukherjee, was on leave on Thursday. "Till Wednesday no permission was sought by the students," she said.
One of the students, Abhradyuti Das, said, "Today, we tried to meet the dean to seek his permission, but it was too late. We will meet him on Monday to seek a formal permission."
