KOLKATA: Kolkata police went on an all round tree plantation drive under the motto "Go Green" in which all the police stations and traffic guard participated on World Environment Day on Friday. Police commissioner Anuj Sharma attended the main programme at the Police Athletic Club tent on Friday morning and planted a couple of trees.
Every police station planned the plantations in a manner so as to involve the local residents.
"We had consulted KMC which asked us to plant only deep rooted trees considering more than 15,000 trees got uprooted in the city. Accordingly, several saplings of neem, mahogany and arjun trees were transported from the Goaltore and other nurseries in Midnapore," said an officer.
At New Alipore police station - where 99 trees got uprooted - close to 300 trees are being planted in a phased manner. "We have formed a WhatsApp team of tree enthusiasts and ensure these plants receive water for atleast the first few weeks till the onset of the rains," said an officer. At the East traffic guard, where senior traffic personnel planted a number of trees around Minto Park, the motorists were requested to take back saplings with them in accordance to the space available near their residences.
At Entally police station, where one round of plantation was already over, cops took oath to look after the newly-planted trees. The cops said they are planning to plant at least 100 strong rooted trees in next one week, the process kicked off last Sunday with plantation of 10 mahogany trees. The soil was provided by the Metro authorities.
At Hastings, special care was taken to ensure that the trees planted at the police station and elsewhere were fenced to ensure they were not destroyed by stray animals or humans. At Sarsuna, which witnessed multiple trees getting uprooted during cyclone Amphan, cops planted deep rooted trees around the local waterbodies. In southeast and central Kolkata, cops planted trees on the boulevards. The idea, they claimed, was to ensure that a new tree got planted where the old one got uprooted.
